The highly anticipated historical drama, Masters of the Air, took viewers on a breathtaking journey into the skies of World War II. As the third installment in the acclaimed WWII series that includes Band of Brothers and The Pacific, this epic production, led by Steven Spielberg (Amblin Television) and Tom Hanks (Playtone), tells the gripping story of the 100th Bomb Group—known as the Bloody Hundredth”—as they faced the challenges of high-altitude bombing missions.

With a production budget exceeding $100 million, Masters of the Air raised the bar for historical storytelling and showcased the transformative potential of virtual production technology. This groundbreaking approach utilized AOTO’s RM2.3 LED panels, working in tandem with Brompton Technology  Tessera processors, to create immersive environments that brought the tension and scale of aerial combat to life.

Immersive LED Volumes: A New Frontier in Filmmaking

  • Filmed at Aylesbury Studios in the UK, the production relied on two custom-built LED volumes to recreate the intense aerial battles of WWII. The primary volume, known as Volume One, featured a 40-foot-wide, 30-foot-high, 270-degree curved LED wall composed of 960 AOTO RM2.3 panels, complemented by a 37-by-32-foot LED ceiling made of 388 additional panels. This setup allowed the filmmakers to authentically replicate the interiors of B-17 bombers, complete with dynamic lighting effects and real-time sky reflections on the aircraft’s glass surfaces.
  • The second volume, designed for wide-angle compositions, featured a massive 110-foot-wide LED wall with minimal curvature. This setup was perfect for capturing sweeping aerial visuals, adding cinematic grandeur to the high-stakes combat sequences.

AOTO’s RM2.3 LED panels were instrumental in delivering consistent brightness and exceptional image quality, while Brompton Technology Tessera processors ensured precise color calibration and seamless synchronization with multiple camera setups. Together, these technologies created a seamless blend of virtual and physical elements, immersing actors and filmmakers alike in the world of the story.

A Collaborative Triumph in Virtual Production
The success of Masters of the Air was a testament to the power of collaboration. Lux Machina led the design and implementation of the virtual production workflow, while MARS developed over 50 proprietary Unreal Engine tools, including real-time effects like flak explosions. These tools allowed directors to trigger dynamic visuals directly on the LED screens, enhancing on-set interaction and actor performance.

Lighting played a crucial role in capturing the authenticity of high-altitude combat. The team utilized a programmable “sun” to replicate historically accurate daylight conditions, while Bild Studios provided engineering support to synchronize the LED systems. Brompton Technology’s processors ensured precise color calibration and visual consistency throughout the shoot, making every frame a visual masterpiece.

Voices from the Set

Kyle Olson, Virtual Production Producer, shared his thoughts on the process:
“Virtual production allowed us to approach storytelling in a way that was both efficient and immersive. The LED volumes created a dynamic environment that brought immediacy and authenticity to every scene. It wasn’t just about the technology—it was about how it enabled us to tell a story that felt real and emotionally resonant.”

Joe Wu, Key Account Sales Director at AOTO, added:
“We are incredibly proud to have contributed to Masters of the Air. Our RM2.3 LED panels not only met the production’s high standards for resolution and color accuracy but also struck the perfect balance between technical performance and historical authenticity. This project is a shining example of how technology can elevate storytelling to new heights.”

A Legacy of Innovation
Masters of the Air was more than just a historical drama—it was a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in filmmaking. By combining cutting-edge virtual production technology with the creative vision of some of the industry’s most talented minds, the series set a new standard for what’s possible in visual storytelling.

As viewers were transported to the skies of WWII, they didn’t just watch a show—they experienced a piece of history, brought to life through the seamless integration of art and technology.
